The Mirror · movement V of VI
The same construction throughout; the only variable is whether the twist has a fixed point of its own. This movement turns that single bit — and shows it is a partition of the whole space of twists, that consistency and limitation are one purchase and not two, and that a system has exactly five walls to raise against the diagonal, and no sixth.
The same construction; the only variable is whether the twist α has a fixed point of its own. That single bit is the difference between power and limitation.
The proof took α as arbitrary and produced a point s with α(s) = s. Everything now depends on one question about α alone: can α have a fixed point at all? If yes, the construction hands it to you, and that is power. If no, the construction demands a value that cannot exist — and, as we have just seen, the point is not lost but displaced. The dial is that fuller picture at its coarsest setting: the single bit beneath the four fates. Turn it.
The bit the dial reads is, more exactly, a question about the whole monoid of twists. Each B partitions its endomaps End(B) into those that have a fixed point and those that do not, and the shape of that partition is set by the structure of B alone. On the bare two truth-values almost every map rests — the identity, the two constants — and exactly one does not: negation. That single exception is the entire content of classical limitation; bivalent logic is dangerous only because its answer-space admits one fixed-point-free map. Enrich B into a complete lattice and the partition changes character: every monotone map now has a fixed point, so within the maps the order permits, the fixed-point-free region is empty — which is exactly why genus two is safe, and exactly what recovery exploits. To re-host ¬ in {T, F, ⊥} is to move it out of the dangerous corner of End(B) and into the monotone interior, where Knaster–Tarski guarantees it the rest ¬(⊥) = ⊥. The dial does not merely report a bit; it reports where the chosen twist sits in a partition the world is free to redraw. Power and limitation are regions, and recovery is redistricting.
Read the dial in reverse and the corpus's deepest claim appears. To possess full self-reference — a point-surjective mirror, a reflexive object — is to grant every twist a fixed point, the friendly ones and ¬ alike. Classical Boolean negation has no fixed point on {T,F}. A point-surjective mirror into all Boolean-valued maps therefore cannot exist: it must crack the glass somewhere — denying that every map is named, or that self-application is even well-formed, the five walls of the atlas. And each crack costs reach: a function no longer total, a logic no longer complete, a theory no longer categorical. That Boolean twist rules out that mirror; the λ-calculus obtains fixed-point terms in a different setting.
The crack can fall in exactly five places, and the Atlas proves the list closed, because it is indexed by the construction's hypotheses and the one inference that turns its fixed point into ruin. Three walls prevent the point from ever forming, by denying a premise of the mirror: stratify — forbid the naming to reach across levels (Tarski's hierarchy of truth, the ramified theory of types); restrict — deny that every predicate names an object (Zermelo's Separation in place of Comprehension, the precise move that saved set theory); discipline — deny that self-application is even well-formed (typing, the axiom of Foundation, Martin-Löf). Two walls survive the point but refuse its catastrophe: weaken — keep the fixed point and drop the structural rule, contraction, that drove Curry's inference to ⊥; tolerate — keep the contradiction and deny that it spreads, surrendering explosion itself (paraconsistency). The first family pays in reach — a function no longer total, a set theory no longer universal, a language no longer its own interpreter; the second pays in logic — a structural rule, or bivalence. There is no sixth wall, because there is no sixth thing to deny.
Power and limit issue from the same fixed point. A system gains recursion exactly to the extent that it can name its own operations; it incurs incompleteness, undecidability, and non-categoricity for exactly that reason. You cannot buy the self-reference that computes without buying the diagonal that limits. They are one purchase.
A movement of The Mirror, the keystone of Quodlibet. The theorem and its five-line proof are Lawvere’s (1969); the synthesis is the author’s.
